Welcome aboard NX-03 Challenger

challenger-patch.png

Challenger is the third ship and the penultimate vessel of the NX Project. The NX-03 joins the UESPA Starfleet as part of of the Coalition of Planets, an alliance opposed to a belligerent power calling itself the "Romulan Star Empire." The date by our calendar is January 2156.

A year and a half ago, our Coalition allies exposed a series of Romulan incursions designed to destabilize the quadrant, and later uncovered a plot to topple the Vulcan High Command. Since that time there has been no confirmed contact- until a month ago.

In late November 2155, an Earth Cargo Service deuterium freighter bound for the Kaleb system was attacked and destroyed. Their last transmission reported they were under attack by two unknown vessels which could appear and disappear, with a hawk-like motif. Two days later an Andorian warship, the Sik-Omari engaged and was destroyed by ships of a similar description.

We are at War. But we are still explorers

Challenger is not a warship. The NX Project's original premise, however tattered by recent events, remains dedicated to exploration. Challenger and its crew is loyal to that vision. Our mandate is to seek out new worlds and new civilizations. We will engage in battle when all other options are exhausted. We can't risk straying too far. We could be called back at any time.

Insurance Policies and Good Faith Loans

Earth Starfleet has stipulated that all vessels must carry between two and three MACO fireteams in the event of hostile engagement, and when answering ships in distress. Intelligence and information gathered by the Challenger must be forwarded in good faith to the officer serving as a Coalition Liaison Officer aboard ships.

Some Earth Starfleet vessels may have a guest officer (or two) from other Coalition services. Earth Starfleet is currently allowing limited numbers of civilian specialists aboard their vessels to serve in roles Starfleet does not train for- medicine, linguistics and science.

Shakedown: January 2156

Challenger is a collaborative writing "Sim" set in the canon Star Trek universe of the 22nd century, and is part of Sim Central. Our plot stays loyal to the Star Trek franchise. While the Earth-Romulan War will occasionally darken our door, the majority of our "missions" are focused on exploring.

We require our writers be at least eighteen years old or older prior to joining. Content allowed follows a (2 | 3 | 2) sim rating, or roughly TV14/PG13, with limited allowance for nudity.

Our maiden voyage is a shakedown cruise. At the behest of our Coridanite allies, our mission takes us near the Orion star system. We are to transport their delegate, Szyraa, to a neutral planet where our delegate will try to negotiate a "reset" of diplomatic relations between United Earth and the Orion Kolar Tabadi.

Mission: Long Night
Posted on Thu Dec 11th, 2025 @ 9:29am by Gunnery Sergeant Nathaniel Hale & 1st Lieutenant Chaol Westfall

The MACO deck smelled of new plating and fresh paint. Hale hated it already.

Gunnery Sergeant Nathaniel Hale stepped through the sliding doors and let the room settle around him. Too quiet. Too polished. Too… untested. A ship shouldn’t look like a showroom floor—not if it expected to survive its first real fight.

He took a slow breath through his nose, arms folding behind his back in a stance he’d held on more worlds than most officers had ever heard of. Everything here felt soft. Clean. Peaceful in a way that made his skin itch.

He preferred scars. Scars meant…

Excited didn’t quite cover it. Chaol Westfall felt a steady, contained pride as he stood on the tarmac at Etajima MACO Special Boarding Unit HQ, watching his fire teams file into the troop shuttle.

Command had allowed him to hand-pick most of them over the past year — a rare courtesy in wartime — with the single exception of Gunnery Sergeant Nathaniel Hale. Hale would be his First Sergeant, seasoned and sharp, the sort of veteran whose presence the entire detachment could learn from. Westfall already knew he’d be grateful for that pairing.

Some of the others he’d recruited…

Mission: Long Night
Posted on Sat Nov 15th, 2025 @ 7:10pm by Gunnery Sergeant Nathaniel Hale

The first thing Gunnery Sergeant Nathaniel Hale noticed about the Challenger was that she smelled too clean.

He’d expected the recycled air, the hum of the environmental systems, the faint tang of metal and ozone — every ship had that. But Challenger was something else: new, polished, untouched. The kind of ship that hadn’t yet learned how to breathe.

His duffel hit the deck with a thud as the docking hatch sealed behind him. The ensign assigned to escort him was half his age and twice as eager, firing off directions and details Hale barely heard.

“MACO quarters are on…

Mission: Long Night

The transport shuttle gave a final shudder as the docking clamps locked with a hollow clang that echoed through its frame. Through the viewport, Challenger floated in Dock 4—bathing in the pale wash of berth lights and reflected starlight. Her hull shimmered with quiet promise, the NX-03 emblem faintly visible along her spine. Stewart exhaled, letting the sight settle into him. This wasn’t just another ship. She was the culmination of everything he’d studied, everything he’d waited for.

The airlock cycled open with a hiss and a rush of cooler, filtered air. He adjusted the strap of his duffel and…

[Starship Challenger]
[Deck One, Situation Room]
[January 2nd, 1500 Hours LT]

The first official meeting of the command staff of the Challenger was less than five minutes away. Samantha Curry sat in the Captain's chair, legs crossed at the knees. She sipped Chef's special chai- with just a touch of chocolate. Not bad. Unusual. The chicory and pinon blends Curry had requested hadn't come on time and were tied up in channels. Oh well. Next flight out of Earth maybe. But Samantha knew she would miss them.

She was studying her notes on a large datapad laid against her thigh.…

January 1st, 2156 – 1800 Hours

“New year, new ship, and we’re finally through launch prep. I’d planned to get everyone down to Cebu for New Year’s Eve, but duty had other ideas. Can’t fault that the Challenger needed every hand to get ready. Still… feels like we should mark the start of the year somehow.

So tonight’s the night. Karaoke in Cebu. Might not be midnight fireworks, but we’ll make our own noise. Sent out invites to the senior staff. Even if only a couple show, it’ll be worth it. We earned it.”

Begin Dictation.

If there is one thing I have learned in life, it is that my Thavan, the General, does not ask, he declares. To him, dialogue is weakness, consultation a luxury for lesser men. He has always been that way, as long as I can remember. He enters a room, and you know immediately where the gravity pulls. And I, like a hapless asteroid, am expected to orbit without complaint.

Today, he came to me in my office at ASC. I knew something was about to hit me the moment the door chime sounded. General Therris th’Bari is not…

Personal Log: December 30th 2155... 1747 local time

Carlsbad Caverns never gets old for me. I see something new every time. Its perfect. It's a nice capstone before the big send off. Down here... near the Lake of the Clouds... 316 meters under the Earth. Shit that is deep and it never doesn't feel that way. Its a weird... peaceful... spiritual place. Water with calcite in it, you can't even begin to describe the colors. Got the sleeping bag out, and it sounds like foil-wrapped hobo stew for dinner. Yum.

Huh. Up to til now m thoughts weren't on what's…
