[Starship Challenger]
[Deck One, Situation Room]
[January 2nd, 1500 Hours LT]
The first official meeting of the command staff of the Challenger was less than five minutes away. Samantha Curry sat in the Captain's chair, legs crossed at the knees. She sipped Chef's special chai- with just a touch of chocolate. Not bad. Unusual. The chicory and pinon blends Curry had requested hadn't come on time and were tied up in channels. Oh well. Next flight out of Earth maybe. But Samantha knew she would miss them.
She was studying her notes on a large datapad laid against her thigh.…

[Launch Bay]
[NX-03 Challenger]
[December 31st, 2155]
[1200 Hours]
"And we're secure..." Shaun Noakes stated. The Scobee's vibrating hum cut when the young NCO reached to a top middle panel above him and killed the thrusters. With a hiss and click, the hatches on the port and starboard sides of the shuttlepod depressurized. The ears of the occupants- at least Shaun's- popped. They did every time for him. He flexed and wiggled his jaw to work out the rest. "Please tip your pilots because..." He smiled back at the two, "They don't pay us anymore. And a boy has to…

Earth, Late December 2155
The kettle whistled before the comm did.
Marina reached it first, pouring two mugs in the way she always had — strong, dark, no sugar. The morning light was slow to arrive, filtered through the soft gray drizzle that clung to the city like breath on glass.
Hale sat at the kitchen table, orders spread out in front of him like a quiet accusation. They weren’t new — they’d come through three days earlier — but he’d read them so many times that the words might as well have been carved into the wood…

[NX-03 Challenger]
[Main Engineering]
[1600 Hours]
Engineering was a shade warmer than the rest of the ship, the kind of gentle heat that came from the warp reactor running quietly at dockside power. The steady thrum of the engine filled the compartment, a vibration Nathan could feel in his chest as much as hear in his ears. Conduits along the walls pulsed with blue-white light, consoles chattered diagnostics, and the air carried the faint tang of metal and ozone.
Nathan paused at the railing of the upper catwalk, letting his gaze sweep over the most advanced propulsion system Earth had…

[NX-03 Challenger – Launch Bay]
[January 1st, 1850 Hours]
The Scobee waited on the polished deck, its hatch lit and ready. The bay was quieter than usual, most of the cargo and inspection bees having finished their work earlier in the day.
Nathan was already there, of course, leaning near the hatch with too much restless energy to sit. He’d traded his duty uniform for something lighter: the fitted blue NX-03 tank top under an open linen shirt, the fabric a pale seafoam green that paired easily with his white shorts. On the hem of those shorts, a tiny rainbow…

January 1st, 2156 – 1800 Hours
“New year, new ship, and we’re finally through launch prep. I’d planned to get everyone down to Cebu for New Year’s Eve, but duty had other ideas. Can’t fault that the Challenger needed every hand to get ready. Still… feels like we should mark the start of the year somehow.
So tonight’s the night. Karaoke in Cebu. Might not be midnight fireworks, but we’ll make our own noise. Sent out invites to the senior staff. Even if only a couple show, it’ll be worth it. We earned it.”
End log.

Begin Dictation.
If there is one thing I have learned in life, it is that my Thavan, the General, does not ask, he declares. To him, dialogue is weakness, consultation a luxury for lesser men. He has always been that way, as long as I can remember. He enters a room, and you know immediately where the gravity pulls. And I, like a hapless asteroid, am expected to orbit without complaint.
Today, he came to me in my office at ASC. I knew something was about to hit me the moment the door chime sounded. General Therris th’Bari is not…

Personal Log: December 30th 2155... 1747 local time
Carlsbad Caverns never gets old for me. I see something new every time. Its perfect. It's a nice capstone before the big send off. Down here... near the Lake of the Clouds... 316 meters under the Earth. Shit that is deep and it never doesn't feel that way. Its a weird... peaceful... spiritual place. Water with calcite in it, you can't even begin to describe the colors. Got the sleeping bag out, and it sounds like foil-wrapped hobo stew for dinner. Yum.
Huh. Up to til now m thoughts weren't on what's…
